In this contemporary English version of the New Testament with Psalms and Proverbs, Eugene Peterson strives to convey the earthy truths of the original Greek and Hebrew texts. As he explains in his introduction, there were two levels of language in the Greek-speaking world, "formal" and "informal". The one was for use in official documents, epic poetry, and philosophy, the other for shopping lists and personal letters--the common idiom of everyday speech. "This is the language used throughout the New Testament ... a rough and earthy language that reveals God's presence and action where we least expect it, catching us when we are up to our elbows in the soiled ordinariness of our lives and God is the furthest thing from our minds."

It is in the spirit of this "soiled ordinariness" that Eugene Peterson translates John 1:14 (NIV: "The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us") to "The word became flesh and blood and moved into the neighborhood." Likewise, in Romans 8:3 where the NIV renders "For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending his own son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering," The Message reads, "God went for the jugular when he sent his own son.... In his son, Jesus, he personally took on the human condition, entered the disordered mess of struggling humanity in order to set it right once and for all." Peterson offers no pretense of elevated language or intellectualism, only the insistence that God is relevant in 20th-century work-week and weekend lives.

This kind of translation is not a new enterprise, however. Tyndale--the man singularly responsible for our English translations of the Bible--is purported to have said in a dispute with opposing clergy, "If God spare my life, ere many years I will cause a boy that driveth the plow to know more of the Scriptures than thou dost." I was disappointed as this Bible has no verse nuimbers in it. If you want to go to Book, Chapter and verse you cannot identify the verse in this book. I would not recommend it.

I have a small old + new testament version of The Message and I am spiritually satisfied with my bible readings. this is a translation of the bible that is written for the 21st century, multitasking and ADHD, pop-culture oriented, american christian! I truly understand the christian faith from this version of the bible and I get spiritually nourished and even entertained by reading The Message.

ALSO, there a lot of criticism that this is not a good bible because its paraphrased and the word choices in The Message is sometimes radically different from older and more trusted translations such as the King James Bible. I understand the concern because bibles are supposed to be a reference point for Christianity and if the reference point is different from the Truth, it throws the christian off and leads to a different "Christianity" or just something else that's not the truth. I have personally compared specific verses in The Message to parallel verses in traditional translations. to my satisfaction, the exact meaning is still in the content of the verses in The Message, the word choice is accurate and reliable and The Message version is better! and honestly (please don't be offended), the people and ministries that complain and preach against The Message, are the dusty old white conservatives that preach and complain about everything else!! Also consider that languages change and grow, and NOBODY understands the King James version! its like reading Shakespeare! you have to take an english class to understand Shakespeare, why? cause people just don't talk that version of english anymore. and people don't talk the way most traditional and trusted translations read, which is why The message is needed. so purchase The Message and actually enjoy reading the bible for a change! :-)

Well, Amazon.com has done it again. I purchased The Message and was pleased that the price was so reasonable and it is such a wonderful way to review passages from the Bible in today's language. I use it all the time and think it is much more easy for youth and children to understand the concepts in the Bible. The old fashioned way of the King James version of the Bible was for then, and The Message is for now. A great purchase!

Great Bible translation to read and understand. I have read the Bible through before, but this translation is so much easier to read and understand.
