Warren's hope is that readers will "interact" with the 40 chapters, reading them one day at a time, with extensive underlining and writing in the margins. As an inspirational manifesto for creating a more worshipful, church-driven life, this book delivers. Every page is laden with references to scripture or dogma. But it does not do much to address the challenges of modern Christian living, with its competing material, professional, and financial distractions. on 2010-02-25I have read a lot of books on goal setting and personal achievement. I have also read a lot of good christian books, but never have I read as outstanding a book as this great work by Rick Warren.
In The Purpose Driven Life, Rick Warren has written a masterpiece of incredible wisdom and wise counsel for you.
AND remember....this is not Rick Warrens opinion, it is God's word.

on 2010-02-21This book is one that I have had for quite some time and have read several times. Each time, something different speaks to me, depending on what I have going on in my life. The writing style is straightforward, as are the concepts. I highly recommend for anyone who is seeking deeper meaning in his/her life.

on 2010-02-20It took me several tries to really get into this book. It was not because it is dense reading (it is the opposite) or anything other author-faults. Rather, i was simply reading it like any other book. Read, learn a few things, feel more informed, move on.
However it was when i really started reflecting on the principles of the book, recalling them throughout my days, that i began to understand why so many people love the book.
That being said, i firmly believe that you do not need to be an orthodox Christian to get anything out of the book. There are wonderful life lessons within every chapter. For example, you may not believe in eternal life. But hey, look at life as if it did exist and you may have a new outlook on things. It is up to the reader on how to unpack the Christian language.
Would recommend the Purpose Driven Life to Christian and non-Christian alike. It contains lessons toward a meaningful and fulfilled existence.
If you doubt this, simply look at the author. When i first heard/saw Rick Warren i had absolutely no interest in him (seemed like a typical/scary megachurch pastor). I was sure that he was greedy, exclusive, and was a simple false prophet.
However after researching more about the man i came to realize how different he was from this stereotype. The amount of charity work both he and his church (saddleback) do is simply inspiring. Love is quite obviously the center, and there is lots of humility. Simply do some research yourself! You do not have to agree with everything he says (I do not) to admit he is a loving leader.
So all in all, i at least recommend you sit down at a bookstore and read the first chapter or two, see how you react to it. I was expecting something very different, but was surprised by the message. Worship, Fellowship, Discipleship, Ministry, and Witness. That works for me.

on 2010-02-11Far be it from me to take anything away from those who say that their lives have been enriched by this book. Spiritual growth can come in many forms and from many different sources.
In my opinion, though, when someone registers a trademark on "their" system of enlightenment and publishes everything from a workbook to a DVD set on the topic -- well, let's just say I don't think that's the way Christ approached teaching. Seems like the author has a bit of an ego and is definitely looking out for the old bottom line.

on 2010-02-10This is a marvelous book. It was one of the fundamental elements that God used to change my life and help me dedicate my life to him. I recommend it to all people, young and old. Even if you are already a strong Christian it is still a good reminder of the ground work for how to live a life committed to Jesus Christ.
